The Hub of Our Home: Our Kitchen Reveal

It is finally here, the reveal of our kitchen. I was waiting for the right time to share, at least when I was closer to being done with this room but I’m building a home and therefore these rooms are going to see a few transformations over the years. I’ve already started a vintage copper collection to add in here and need to switch out the rest of the appliances but I think for now we need a break. What started as a quick paint job quickly spiraled into what has become my favorite space. Here is what it looked like in the listing.

And here is the after.

I switched out the refrigerator a few months after we moved in. The original refrigerator aside from being unsightly, couldn’t properly fit enough for our not so little household of six. When we finally started work on the kitchen, we opted for changing the backsplash to glass thin subway tile in a sage color which paired beautifully with the countertops, the only thing we liked and kept in this kitchen. Honestly, I could have stopped there because it made such a difference in the feel of the space but Mr. A said we already committed and that’s when I realized this would spiral and spiral it did. Once the cabinets were painted (City Lights by SW), Mr. A hated the floor even more and so it needed to be refinished. It was overdue anyway, but I was trying to hold off a bit but alas we did all the wood floors throughout the first floor. Which lead us to our last project…the original trim. We went back and forth with this one quite a bit. I hated it originally, but it grew on me and in the family room looked beautiful since everything else was a light neutral shade. However, in the kitchen and in the dining room especially, it seems so dark and almost orange. So, we had the trim painted bright white throughout the entire first floor. And just when I thought we were done, Mr. A decided the wall color needed changing. You can barely tell unless I point it out in pictures but in person, the original color is a lot darker. I didn’t mind it though I wasn’t in love, and he wanted something a bit lighter. So, this is where I share a funny story about my darling husband because it’s one of those things where I was 1000% confident what would happen, but he wanted to fly by the seat of his pants. He can be a bit impatient, a tad bit head strong, and quite impulsive, often times some may see these as flaws but his flaws can be quite attractive and often work in my favor but not this time. I’ve learned that in times like these, it’s best to go with the flow and let him learn the hard way because Mr. A is going to do what Mr. A wants to do and Mrs. A is going to get a good laugh out of it. He chose the first color he liked from a tiny swatch book versus running to the store with me to get samples to test out like I suggested. He even got the painters and some other workers we had here to be on his side. The next day when the painters were done, I hated it and I knew he would hate it so I asked if he could make time for us the next day to repaint as I knew what was coming. As soon as Mr. A got home, he dropped a few eff bombs and we took off to Lowe’s to get swatches as I had originally suggested but for 24 hours our kitchen was baby blue. It is now Revered Grey and yes, I got the last laugh (though he is probably laughing while reading this). Despite a few setbacks and add-ons, we still saved so much by keeping the original cabinets and not changing the layout…yes, Mr. A jumped in after the fact to ask if a different island shape would be better. It was a full stop for me, and he let go of that idea very quickly. Guess he learned his lesson.
